Learn to surf in Morocco: how to choose the right surf camp as a beginner

Never stood on a board? Then you are exactly who our stays are built for. What a surf camp in Morocco does for a beginner — and how to choose the right one.

Learning to surf in Morocco is simpler than it sounds, provided you pick the right place. In Mirleft, an hour and a half south of Agadir, most of our guests have never stood on a board when they arrive. The beach break is made for learning, the water sits around nineteen degrees — and nobody is watching.

Do I need to know how to surf already?

No. No prior experience is required, and that is not politeness — it is how the stays are built. Sessions are guided, eight people per instructor at most, and the instructor adapts each one to the group: first in the whitewater, standing on a soft board, then further out once it holds. The only real requirement is that you can swim.

Where in Morocco is the best place to learn?

Where the waves are gentle and the beach is not full. Taghazout, north of Agadir, has excellent waves and knows it — in high season dozens of surfers share the same peak. Mirleft is an hour and a half further south, with the same Atlantic swell on almost empty beach breaks. For a beginner that means more waves per session and fewer people to collide with.

How quickly do you stand up on your first wave?

Usually in the first or second session — standing in the whitewater, for a few seconds, long enough to understand why people do this. What takes longer is the rest: paddling efficiently, reading the wave, choosing the right moment. That is why the length of the stay matters.

What gear do I need to bring?

Nothing technical. Board and wetsuit are included in every guided session — a 3/2 suit is enough at nineteen degrees. The rest you pack yourself:

  • Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit.
  • High-factor, water-resistant sunscreen.
  • A towel and something warm for after the session.
  • Surf booties if you worry about your feet — optional on the beach break.

How many days does a beginner need?

That is the real question, and the answer depends on what you are after.

  • Five days: the standard format — this is where the technique starts to hold on its own.
  • Seven days: the time it takes for surfing to become a habit rather than an effort.
  • Ten days: when you stop counting, and the wave becomes a rhythm.

For a first stay, five days is the best trade-off between progress and days off work: long enough to get past the first frustration, short enough to fit in a week. If you want to add the desert, the seven- and ten-day variants include two days in a bivouac south of Sidi Ifni.

What does it cost, and what is included?

From €419 for five days in a shared room. The price includes the guided surf sessions timed to the day's conditions, board and wetsuit, accommodation in a shared or private room and full board — lunch at the surf school's seaside café, dinner cooked at the camp.

Yoga, the transfer from Agadir airport (€50 return per person), hammam and excursions are optional extras. You pay 20% when booking and the balance 15 days before arrival. All prices by length are on the stays page.

When is the best time of year to start?

The season runs from September to May, with water around nineteen degrees. For a beginner, autumn and spring are the most comfortable: regular but reasonable swell. In midwinter, when the Atlantic sends bigger waves, we move the sessions to more sheltered spots — so you can learn here all season long. It is also when it is darkest back home, which is not an argument, but almost.
