When to surf in Morocco? The season, month by month

In short: the best time to surf in Morocco is between September and May — that is when the North Atlantic lows send long, regular waves. And because the spots around Mirleft are picked each day by ability and conditions, that window suits beginners and experienced surfers alike.

When are the waves best?

From September to May the North Atlantic is at work: regular swells, points waking up one after another, and water that stays mild — around nineteen degrees, barely cooler in the depths of winter. That is the full surf season in Morocco, nine months long.

Mirleft — which level is it for?

Every level. That is where the coast at Mirleft makes the difference: it lines up soft, progressive beach breaks, perfect for a first take-off, and sharper points for anyone who wants to push. Each day the instructor picks the spot by your level and the day's conditions — a beginner on a sheltered beach, an experienced surfer on a punchier peak, often the same morning. Nobody is left on the sand.

What to expect month by month?

• September–October — the water still mild and the first autumn swells: the gentlest way into the season for a beginner.
• November–February — the heart of the Atlantic winter and its finest swells; the experienced go for the points, beginners keep to Mirleft's sheltered coves (barely cooler water, wetsuit provided).
• March–May — the swell holds, the days get longer, the light is magnificent: the best compromise of waves and sun.
• June–August — the quieter summer: small waves, a warm sea, perfect for families and very first sessions.
